Looking at the increasing technological development in the field of hearing,
Center for Høretab is constantly moving. The qualifications and products of
Center for Høretab are continuously adjusted to the needs of the children.
Center for Høretab is financed partly by charging each product, partly by
contributions from the local authorities.
The School department:
The school department covers children with hearing loss from
pres-school to 10th grade.
Many students are of average intelligence, but have a special
need for visual communication, smaller class environments and
efficient technical equipment.
Some students have further needs, or they have other disabilities.
The school is run like a municipal primary and lower secondary school. The
students are taught according to common objectives and on a level individually
adjusted to each student. Furthermore the students are offered individual
teaching in articulation and auditory training. The teaching language in class
is Danish with visual support and/or sign language, depending on the individual
need of each student. The teaching is in small groups in suitable classrooms
with technical equipment supporting each student in the best possible way.
In collaboration with the local authorities in the nearby town Fredericia,
Center for Høretab is in some cases able to offer children with hearing loss
individually adjusted teaching in one of the municipal primary and lower
secondary schools.
Some students travel daily by bus to school and home again. Others stay at
the boarding homes one or more days a week.

The Department for Counselling an Educational Services
Counselling Concerning Infants
The Department offers teaching and guidance to infants with hearing loss,
their families and the professional staff working with the child.
This service takes place as an alternation between teaching and guidance in
the local area and as courses at Center for Høretab for parents and professional
staff. The teaching is given either at home or in the child's day-care-centre
and with the attendance of a parent or a local caretaker.
The courses are planned in a way that gives parents and professional staff
the possibility to meet others in the same situation, and gives them the
possibility to establish a network.
Furthermore the department offers assessments/observations of infants which
includes diagnosing, examinations and tests in the local area and at
Center for Høretab.
Counselling Concerning Schoolchildren
The department offers observation/assessments and guidance concerning
schoolchildren with hearing loss included in a local primary or lower-secondary
school or a class for children with hearing loss. The observation/assessment is
carried out as a stay at Center for Høretab for two to four weeks and with daily
transport between home and Center for Høretab. The child's hearing, language and
skills are tested as well as screening of motor function and cognitive
development. The results of the observation/assessment provide the background
for guidance to parents and professional staff. The department also offers
guidance locally concerning schoolchildren.
Finally courses are made for students with hearing loss at local primary and
lower-secondary schools. Hearing courses for schoolchildren as residential
courses and family courses as residential courses are offered with the purpose
to give both groups experiences together with others in the same situation.
Linguistic Counselling
The department offers observation concerning linguistic counselling for
infants with normal hearing but with language and communication disabilities and
for their families and the professional staff. The observation/assessment takes
place during a stay at Center for Høretab for two weeks and with daily transport
between home and Center for Høretab. The results of the observation/assessment
provide the background for guidance to parents and professional staff.
Technical-Audiological Department
The tasks of the department are related to both the permanent students at
Frederiaskolen and to the children attending a local primary or lower-secondary
school or a class for children with hearing loss attending an observation stay
at Center for Høretab. The department makes hearing tests of the children,
evaluates the audiological treatment and offers guidance concerning the
technical equipment in the home schools and offers guidance concerning the
equipment of the classes at Center for Høretab.
Training and Courses
Center for Høretab offers different kind of communication courses to parents,
relatives and professional staff. In addition courses for local caretakers,
teachers and others.
We have established a network group with the assignment to ensure the
gathering of scientific knowledge and communication by arranging courses and
topic/project days. Another task is to extend scientific knowledge by launching
development projects.
The Boarding Facilities
Many of our students come at a certain age to the point of having a need to
spend more social time with their friends from school. This can be difficult to
achieve in their home environment.
Some students then choose – having conferred this with their parents – to
move to one of the boarding homes. Some choose to begin with two or three days a
week and then later extend it to full-time. Others find it suitable with two or
three days and continue like this.
In the boarding homes the need for being together with other children with
hearing loss in a bilingual environment are met. Everyday life is organized in a
way that allows each child to be part of a community in which the emotional and
social development of the child is in focus.
The work at the boarding homes is carried out in close cooperation with the
parents.
There are five boarding homes. The hostels Lunavænget, Marsvænget,
Plutovænget and Uranusvænget are situated close to the school. The fifth home is
an old town house in the town centre.
Each home houses five to eight children. Two of the homes are used by
students with only a hearing loss. One home is for children in need of special
care and treatment, another is for children with other disabilities than their
hearing loss, and the town house is for the oldest students who are about to
leave school. Three of the boarding homes are closed during weekends and
holidays, but the treatment home and the home for children with other
disabilities have extended opening hours at weekends and during holidays.
